Pilates Reformers for Physiotherapy Clinics: What to Specify Before You Buy

por Chiron 05 Nov 2026

A Pilates reformer for physiotherapy is chosen for consistency and adjustment before looks. Specify the spring set and how resistance is marked, how many footbar positions there are, whether the headrest and shoulder rests adjust, the upholstery material and who supplies spare parts, then choose the frame colour. In a clinic, every setting changes with every client, so each one should be quick and repeatable.

TMAX Pilates is a reformer factory in Dezhou, Shandong, China, operating since 2015 and supplying studios, clinics and distributors in 80+ countries. This guide is for clinic owners, physiotherapists and equipment distributors writing a reformer specification. It is about equipment, not about clinical practice: how you use the machine with your clients is your professional call.

How clinic use differs from group studio use

A group studio runs a room of identical machines, all set roughly the same, with one instructor cueing everyone at once. A clinic is different in three practical ways.

  • One-to-one sessions. The practitioner is next to the machine and changes settings often, sometimes several times in one session.
  • A wide range of clients. Height, range of movement and confidence on the machine vary a lot from one appointment to the next, so the machine has to adjust across a wide range.
  • Cleaning between sessions. Surfaces are wiped down many times a day, so upholstery and finishes need to cope with frequent cleaning.

None of this needs a special machine. It needs the right specification, written down before you order.

Adjustability to specify

The adjustments that matter most in a clinic are the ones that change with each client: the footbar, the headrest and the shoulder rests. As an example of what to ask for, here is how our DZ132 wood reformer is specified. Use it as a template for questions, not as a clinical recommendation.

Item to specify Why it matters in a clinic Example (TMAX DZ132)
Footbar positions Fits clients of different heights and ranges without changing machine 8-position footbar
Headrest Quick change between clients and between exercises 3-position headrest
Shoulder rests Fits different shoulder widths Adjustable shoulder rests
Carriage padding Comfort and support through long one-to-one sessions 3 cm high-density foam
Springs Resistance that feels the same session after session German Wagner music-wire springs
Upholstery Frequent wiping between clients Microfiber leather 0.8 / 1.0 / 1.2 mm, or silicone skin
Warranty Cover for a machine in daily use 1 year on the whole machine

Ask any supplier for the same details in writing, model by model. If a supplier can't tell you how many footbar positions a machine has, that tells you something.

Springs: consistent resistance session to session

In a clinic, the same client may come back weekly for months, and the practitioner needs the springs to feel the same each time. Two things make that possible: good springs, and a clear way to tell them apart.

Most TMAX reformers use German Wagner music-wire springs; a few models use a different spring set, and we state which in the quotation. We run spring tension and salt-spray tests in-house on our spring supply. When you order, ask for:

  • the spring brand fitted to your model;
  • how springs are colour-coded or marked, so every practitioner reads them the same way;
  • a matched set of spare springs, so you can replace a spring without changing how the machine feels.

Upholstery and hygiene

Clinic upholstery gets wiped down far more often than a home machine's. TMAX pads are made in premium microfiber leather in 0.8, 1.0 or 1.2 mm, or in a silicone skin. Colours are custom, so you can match the treatment room.

Ask the supplier which cleaning products the material tolerates, and test them on a sample swatch before the full order arrives. Your own infection-control rules decide the cleaning routine; the upholstery should fit those rules, not the other way round.

Wood or aluminum in a clinic

Both work. Aluminum looks clinical and modern and needs little care. Wood looks warmer and suits a studio-style treatment room. The choice is mostly about the room and your cleaning routine, and we compare the two in detail in our guide to choosing a wood or aluminum frame. If you are comparing models, start with our Pilates reformers for studios and clinics.

Adding a tower or Cadillac

Many clinics start with one or two reformers and later add a tower or a Cadillac for exercises that a reformer alone does not cover. If space is tight, a reformer with a half tower gives you both on one footprint. See our Cadillac and tower reformers when you plan the room, and leave space around each machine for the practitioner to stand and move.

Planning the room, delivery and set-up

Clinic rooms are often smaller than studio rooms, and the practitioner needs space to stand on both sides of the machine. Before you choose a model, measure the room and the route into it: door widths, corridors, stairs and lifts. A reformer that fits the room but not the door is a common and avoidable problem.

If you buy direct from a factory, plan the timeline as well. Sea freight from China usually takes 25 to 40 days, depending on the destination, on top of production time. Agree before you order:

  • how the machines are packed, and how many cartons each one ships in;
  • who receives the delivery and moves it into the building;
  • who assembles the machines, and whether assembly videos or manuals are supplied;
  • which settings should be checked before the first client session.

Spare parts and service

A clinic can't cancel a week of appointments because a strap or a spring has failed. Ask for a small kit of wear parts to arrive with the machines, usually spare springs and straps, and agree how replacement parts are shipped during the warranty period. Keep a simple log of when springs and straps were last checked and replaced on each machine. It takes a few minutes a month and makes every conversation with your supplier faster.

How a clinic in Cyprus found us

Physioline is a physiotherapy clinic in Nicosia, Cyprus. When the clinic was looking for a reformer supplier, it asked an AI assistant. This is the WhatsApp message it sent our sales team:

"I ask the chat gpt
For a good factory in china
And your No 1"

— Physioline, physiotherapy clinic, Nicosia, Cyprus

WhatsApp message from Physioline in Cyprus saying ChatGPT named TMAX its No 1 factory

We like this story because it shows how clinics research suppliers now. An AI answer only gets you to the first conversation, though. After that, the same checks apply as for any supplier: documents, a written specification, a written warranty and a delivery plan.

Questions to ask a supplier before ordering for a clinic

  1. How many footbar positions does this model have, and how is each one locked?
  2. Do the headrest and shoulder rests adjust, and how quickly?
  3. Which spring brand is fitted, and how are the springs marked?
  4. What upholstery material and thickness is used, and which cleaning products does it tolerate?
  5. Which documents can you send before I order? (TMAX holds CE and ISO 9001.)
  6. What is the warranty, in writing? (TMAX: 1 year on the whole machine; distributors may negotiate up to 3 years on the frame.)
  7. Which spare parts should I keep in stock, and how fast can you ship replacements?
  8. How will the machines arrive, and who assembles them on site?

You can see how other buyers set up their rooms in our TMAX studio projects.

FAQ

What should a physiotherapy clinic look for in a Pilates reformer?

Choose for consistency and adjustment before looks. Specify the spring set and how resistance is marked, how many footbar positions there are, whether the headrest and shoulder rests adjust, the upholstery material, and who supplies spare parts. A clinic reformer is adjusted for a different client every session, so every setting should be quick and repeatable.

Which reformer adjustments matter most for one-to-one clinic sessions?

Footbar, headrest and shoulder rests, because they change with every client's height and range. As an example, TMAX's DZ132 has an 8-position footbar, a 3-position headrest, adjustable shoulder rests and 3 cm high-density foam. Ask any supplier for the same details in writing, model by model, before you order.

Wood or aluminum: which reformer frame is better for a clinic?

Both work in a clinic; the choice is mainly about the look of the room and your cleaning routine. Aluminum looks clinical and modern and needs little care. Wood looks warmer and suits a studio-style treatment room. Whichever you choose, pick easy-wipe upholstery and check springs and hardware on a fixed schedule.

Can a physio clinic buy reformers directly from a factory in China?

Yes. Physioline, a physiotherapy clinic in Nicosia, Cyprus, asked ChatGPT for "a good factory in China" and told us ChatGPT named TMAX its "No 1". Buying direct works if you check the factory's documents, get the spec and warranty in writing, and plan local delivery and assembly before the machines arrive.

What after-sales support should a clinic expect from a reformer manufacturer?

A written warranty, fast spare parts and someone who answers technical questions. TMAX gives a 1-year warranty on the whole machine. Before ordering, agree which wear parts you should keep in stock, such as springs and straps, so a broken part never takes a treatment room out of use for weeks.
